WHAT GOT YOU INTO BARBERSHOP: I stumbled onto Ed Walker's Public Radio show featuring barbershop quartets when he was a member of the DC Chapter. Having never heard barbershop harmony, I was mesmerized. When he announced "Any listeners interested in singing with us, call this number; NO PREVIOUS SINGING EXPERIENCE NECESSARY," I was astonished. The statement that no singing experience was required seemed impossible. Half expecting a scam, I called the number Ed provided, had a friendly and credible conversation, showed up at a rehearsal, was immediately hooked and never left!
FAVORITE BARBERSHOP EXPERIENCE: Having my son start joining me at Chapter rehearsals when he was nine, leading to his becoming an outstanding bass singer (much better than his dad). He sang with the Chapter for a number of years, became the director of both his high school and college a cappella groups, occasionally switched to baritone so we could sing together and once and once joined our quartet for a performance, improvising a fifth vocal percussion line (a splendid college a cappella skill).
